Not only is today New Years Eve, it is also the last day of my Mexican Inspired Christmas mini series and I thought it would be quite fitting to round things off with a little tipple. Most people associate Sangria with Spain, but did you know the Mexicans have their own take on this rich, fruity, drink? Served warm and slightly spiced, this delicious drink is similar to a traditional mulled wine, but with a dash of brandy and a squeeze of lime there is a distinct Mexican note in every mouthful.
Hot spiced sangria is a very easy drink to make, I like to prepare it in advance so the flavours really have time to infuse and pop, just put all the ingredients in to a pan and simmer for around 30 minutes! Then reheat briefly when you are ready to party. Simple and delicious! The recipe is below, feel free to play around with the quantities, this works well for my palate but get creative and see what you like. Enjoy!
Hot Spiced Sangria
2 Cups of Red Wine
1/4 Cup of Brandy
1/4 Cup of Orange Juice
1/4 Cup of White Wine
A Squeeze of Lime Juice
1/2 A Red Apple
1/2 An Orange
Teaspoon of Sugar
2 Dried Cayenne Peppers
A Large Stick of Cinnamon
Put all the liquids, the cinnamon stick and the cayenne pepper (my secret ingredient!!) in to a pan and heat gently. Chop the fruit and pop that in too. Stir in a spoonful of sugar and raise the heat a little. When it starts simmering at the edges turn down again and leave on and low heat for 30 minutes. Taste, and if you and are happy, it’s ready to serve or to reheat later. The longer you leave it the more potent the flavours will become.
Serve in sugar rimmed glasses with a bowl of tortillas and enjoy responsibly 😉
Happy New Year Everybody!
